ABOUT HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO OBTAIN A LICENSE TO SELL ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES?

The approximate time to obtain a license is 75-90 days. This time frame can vary dependent on the type of license applied for and the certification required by the local governing authorities in the city and county of the proposed location. This countdown starts the day you come in to our office to apply for your alcohol license. **Please note that locations near schools or churches are subject to longer processing times and will vary on a case by case basis**

HOW FAR AWAY DOES A LOCATION THAT SELLS ALCOHOL NEED TO BE FROM A CHURCH OR SCHOOL?

The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Code permits city councils or county commissioners courts to adopt a local ordinance prohibiting the sale of alcoholic beverages within 300 feet of a public or private school, church and/or public hospital. For schools, the measurement is taken from the two closest property lines of the proposed business location and the school. For churches, the measurement is take from the front door of the business to the front door of the church. We recommend coming into our office to do a location check before purchasing or building near a church or school, to make sure the address qualifies to get an alcohol license.

1. Q: But I've seen convenience stores sell beer that are right next door to a church or school, how is that possible? A: The convenience store was licensed before the church or school owned the neighboring property. MAY A LICENSE OR PERMIT BE MOVED FROM ONE LOCATION TO A NEW LOCATION?

Yes, but only upon approval of the TABC after the holder submits an application requesting such a change. A license to sell beer may only be transferred to a location within the county in which it was originally issued. A permit to sell liquor may be transferred to another location in Texas.
